Miles Davis will be released this year as part of a new deal between NFT platform Snowcrash, Universal Music and Sony Music.
Miles Davis was one of the most influential jazz musicians of his era. Davis recorded several albums with his sextet during the 1950s, including “Porgy and Bess” and “Kind of Blue,” the largest-selling jazz album of all time, selling more than 2 million copies.
The trumpeter and composer passed away on September 28, 1991, at St. John’s Hospital and Health Center in Santa Monica, Calif. He was 65 years old.
Bob Dylan will also be immortalized in the NFT world via the Snowcrash platform.
“Snowcrash is a promising new NFT marketplace with strong leadership connections to the music community, experienced technology vision and differentiated in-house creative capabilities. We are pleased to be partnering with them to identify and develop a range of opportunities for our recording artists with a focus on delivering accessible, user-friendly experiences for both creators and fans,” Dennis Kooker, President at Global Digital Business, Sony Music Entertainment, said in a statement.
This is not the first time Davis has been turned into an NFT.
In December, Melanated NFT Gallery, a Black-and female-owned startup in the NFT and metaverse space, launched its “Melanated Originals,” which featured five unreleased tracks from late rapper DMX and a photograph of the late jazz legend.
“Miles Davis – Synesthesia,” is a three-part series containing a visual and audio manifestation using a 1970s photograph of Miles Davis on the roof of the Chateau Marmont. Miles’ cousin and closest friend, artist Corky McCoy, took the photo. He was also the camera behind Davis’ iconic album covers.
NFTs have already worked their way into the music industry, with several artists using the blockchain to roll out projects outside of their major record deals. As labels grapple to hold onto artists seeking broader freedoms, NFTs could help them to further cash in on their posthumous catalogs.
