BADMANSKULLGANG launched Hip-Hop’s first-ever metaverse avatar collection.
The company announced the launch of its new collection via social media. The avatars are of some of Hip-Hop’s most revered artists, including, Future, Jay-Z, Nipsey Hussle, Notorious B.I.G The Game, Tupac Shakur and more.
Despite the company’s history-making claims, very little information about the collection has been publicized apart from a cryptic message left on its official website.
“The BADMANSKULLGANG has been indicted on unknown charges and the gang is awaiting trial in an Ethereum blockchain jail. Gang members are known to stay dangerous and are notorious #BlockchainBullies,” the brief statement reads. “The BADMANSKULLGANG has 3,333 known members. Free the entire #BADMANSKULLGANG and help them escape to the metaverse where they can live free.”
You can find out more about the collection on the BADMANSKULLGANG website.
Cryptocurrency and NFTs have successfully infiltrated the genre, as artists find creative new ways to shift away from the draconian rule of the major record label. With NFTs also comes freedom.
Last year, Canadian rapper Tory Lanez teamed up the E-NFT platform for the release of his album, “When It’s Dark,” as an NFT, or “non-fungible token.” Each copy of the album was minted with a one-of-a-kind token, making each copy unique and guaranteeing they would increase in value.
Lanez claimed the album sold one million copies in under a minute. He also proudly declared that one of his NFTs had already been sold for $50,000.
In November, Method Man launched his first Tical Universe NFT (non-fungible token) comic characters minted on Flow in partnership with TuneGO and Dapper Labs.
NFTs are periodically disregarded as a vulgar “cash grab,” but John Kohl, CEO of TuneGO, made it clear that the vision is long-term. “This Genesis NFT drop signifies the dawn of the Tical Universe and the birth of the original Tical Universe characters,” he said in a statement. “Collectors who purchase these original NFTs will own a piece of history.”
Several other rappers, including Azealia Banks, Ja Rule, Jay-Z and even late rapper, MF Doom, have thrown their hats into the NFT ring.
